ROUTE 96/SCHOOL STREET INTERSECTION

Victor, NY

Back to Gallery

Problem

The School Street/Route 96 (Main Street) intersection is situated within the Village of Victor and accommodates traffic volumes in excess of 14,000 vehicles per day. The skewed intersection alignment and the presence of significant turning volumes of truck-trailer vehicles resulted in unsafe conditions as wheels routinely "jumped" the curb onto the sidewalk.

Solution

Construction drawings included intersection improvements to provide adequate pavement area to accommodate truck turns while preserving valuable property adjacent to the intersection.

A three centered asymmetric curve design was employed to service the WB-62 design vehicle. The resultant channelizing lane with refuge island provided adequate maneuvering room for truck traffic and a protected intersection crossing for pedestrians.

Traffic signal modifications, pavement marking designs, and traffic maintenance schemes were also provided.
